Femmes d’Alger

Kamal Dehane
1993 Algeria; Belgium 55 minutes French

In a society where a man’s vision predominates, there is nonetheless another view of the world’ a woman’s. A view that disturbs the established order, questions propriety, breaks taboos, loosens tongues, emerges from the shadows. Alongside the Algerian historian and writer, Assia Djebar, we meet Algerian women of all ages and discover their everyday lives in a world supposedly hidden from outside eyes. The women tell their stories and boldly confront the camera, taking us on a journey into another Algeria where silence and secrecy are the rule.
