Somewhere Better

The Kovac family are Slovakian gypsy refugees that have come to the United Kingdom and are awaiting a reply to their application for asylum. When Ester Kovacova, the mother, dies in London, her ten children come together to give her a traditional-style funeral. But they find themselves facing a crisis. They are torn between their Rom identity with its Czech ties, and their wish to settle permanently in the UK. Tensions arise, as Zdenek and Honza, the men of the family, pay no heed to their mother’s wish to be buried next to her husband in her native land. The filmmaker follows the family members for over two years and helps familiarise us with their vision of the world. In the course of events, be it moving house or the varyingly successful business ventures, the filmmaker discovers some lesser known sides of an England in which they find it hard to find their place.
