Gacaca, revivre ensemble au Rwanda ?

In 1994, in the space of only three months, 800,000 Rwandans were massacred during the genocide of the Tutsis. Eight years on, this film shows the Rwandans’ attempts at reconciliation through the participatory judicial system of the Gacaca. These jurisdictions have been set up by the new government and originate in pre-colonial tradition. The system involves survivors and prisoners from a small community giving evidence face to face in a form of justice “carried out under the trees”. The traumatic stories help us to understand the main problems facing the Rwandans in their search for truth and justice, as well as in their efforts to forgive the unacceptable. Will the Gacaca succeed in reaching this reconciliation, so vital for the future generations?
