Al Zakira

Mohamed Malas
1977 Syria 13 minutes Arabic

In the ruins of Quneitra, an old woman lives alone with her cats. She survives thanks to a few hens and her vegetable garden. She has never left town, either under the Israeli army’s occupation or when it was destroyed. In her fragmented memory, she mixes her father’s death, Greta Garbo’s films, wanderings between Lebanon and Palestine, from war to war, one exodus after another. Her brother is in America and will not return. Before, she wrote everything down, but nothing is left of her notes: she has only her memory to count on.
