Georges de La Tour

Alain Cavalier
1997 France 27 minutes French

“I have a close relationship to the painter, Georges de La Tour. His pictures have helped me in making my films. Moreover, they have in a precise way crossed my personal life. At the heart of my film about La Tour is this intimate emotion that brings on love for a work… I shot this film in a studio, using reproductions. It is difficult to tour the museums of the world to film each painting. And so as to protect the pictures, shooting conditions are very strict… In the editing process, shots have been kept in the order they were filmed. I wanted to stay close to the evolution of my feelings for a Tour. This impressionist approach to a painter is almost the same as the one I had in my series of 24 woman portraits. La Tour’s works (some thirty of them) are still pictures endowed with a radiation and density that few man-made works possess. I, as a filmmaker with my moving 24 frames per second, happen to feel a little jealous of this rare achievement. ” Alain Cavalier
