Obama Song

Dominique Dubosc
2008 France 17 minutes English

Obama Song is a snapshot of Harlem while the crowds are exploding with joy. A wave of emotion, shouts, laughter, tears, joys and fears, the truth hardly to be believed, the cross-over from Yes we can to Yes we did it inconceivable and unreal, even after it has come true. Too good to be true. Everywhere people are having photos taken of themselves, with digital cameras, cell phones, as if there was a pressing need to fix the moment, record an image, a trace, should the original ever happen to disappear. A moment of grace and enthusiasm, but also of doubt, incertitude, exhaustion. Ballet and song together, which Dubosc captures in a few key venues in long black and white sequence-shots. In this Harlem night, one single point of colour, Obama’s speech. Harlem comes out of a long, very long night. (Yann Lardeau)
