Sigui 1971 – La Dune d’Idyeli

Jean Rouch
1971 France 53 minutes no words

The fifth year of the Sigui ceremonies, celebrated every sixty years by the Dogons of the Bandiagara cliffs, Mali, takes place in the village of Idyeli. On the eve of the celebration, all men climb a dune opposite the cliff and bury themselves in a kind of burrow. The next morning they come out and purify themselves at the village spring, then put on women clothes and come dancing into the village square.
