Le Retour à  la terre

In 1930, with unemployment rampant, a movement began to colonize the Abitibi region, where the land was cleared for cultivation on the basis of a plan for which the church was largely responsible. The church preached in favour of the return to the land and announced to the unemployed : « A kingdom awaits you ». Pierre Perrault here presents lyrical sequences alternating with interviews filmed some thirty years later, as the government was planning to abandon the Abitibi.
