A Guerra da agua

Licinio Azevedo
1995 Mozambique 73 minutes Portuguese

In Chicomo, a forested region in the interior of Mozambique, the wells were often destroyed during the war to prevent them falling into enemy hands. During the months when water is low, the rain-water in the family storage tanks runs out and the women sometimes have to walk for two days to fill their buckets. Following the threads of four intertwined stories, the film shows how the whole community counters adversity and organises itself to win the battle for water: the local officials and mechanics in charge of repairing the pumps, the elders versed in nature’s secrets and the art of hollowing out tanks in the trunks of the baobab trees.
