A People in the Shadows
In 1979, the Islamic Republic brought the Shah’s reign to a close. One year later, Saddam Hussein, backed by the United States, launched an attack on Iran, a war that caused over a million deaths. Teheran has since become a megalopolis of 14 million inhabitants. People in the Shadows offers us a contrasting portrait of its people, who live under the shadow of yesterday’s martyrs and in fear of their own martyrdom, yet still fully enjoy the pleasures of life on the borderline of prohibition. Paradox lies at the core of People in the Shadows, which is both an exaltation of a city and its people and a persistent interrogation of the contradictions of the government’s dogma, “Independence, liberty, Islamic Republic”, where the two faces of society are at the same time linked but opposed.
Bani Khoshnoudi est née à Téhéran, puis a immigré aux États-Unis en 1979. Après avoir étudié la photographie et la réalisation de films à Austin, Texas, elle s’installe en France ou elle a réalisé des courts-métrages ainsi qu’un documentaire pour Arte, Shirin Ebadi : A simple lawyer.
En 2006, elle crée sa propre maison de production, Pensée Sauvage. Elle travaille aussi sur des installations video et prépare son premier long-métrage de fiction.
Elle vit actuellement entre Téhéran et New York.

Bahni Khoshnoudi est née à Téhéran et a immigré aux États-Unis avec sa famille en 1979. Après avoir étudié la photo et le cinéma à Austin, elle est partie pour Paris, y tournant des courts-métrages de fiction et films expérimentaux. En 2004 elle réalise pour Arte le documentaire de long-métrage Shirin Ebadi : A Simple Lawyer. En 2006, elle fonde sa maison de production , Pensée Sauvage. Elle écrit actuellement son premier long-métrage de fiction.
