A Wedding in Ramallah

Sherine Salama
2002 Australia 90 minutes English; Arabic
DR

A drama in three acts: In early summer 2000, Bassam, a Palestinian working in the States, returns to Palestine to find a “home-made” bride. The political situation is still relatively calm and weddings are still being celebrated. His family introduces him to Mariam, a traditional village girl, and two weeks later they are married. But, shortly after, the second Intifada breaks out, and the Palestinian territories are engulfed in violence. Mariam has no visa and cannot go to the States with her husband. She remains stuck at her parents-in-laws’ in the middle of a war zone. When she finally arrives in the States, she finds herself isolated in a country where the language and culture are not her own.
