Alrededor de la salinas

Jacinto Esteva Grewe
1962 Spain 23 minutes Spanish

Presented at the 1963 Cannes Festival along with Luis Buñuel’s The Exterminating Angel. Inspired by the cinema-vérité of Chronique d’un été (Chronicle of a Summer), it challenges the documentary description of the Ibiza salt marshes by introducing a fictional event concerning one of the characters. “After filming in the salt marshes for a few days, we decided to go ahead with the idea of staging the faked death of one of the workers, so that we could incite a series of reactions enabling us to create a clear separation between objective reality and cinematic reality. We had planned it beforehand with the salt worker who leads the line of men from one pond to another. On the last round before lunch, he separated from the group and pretended to faint. We then offered to take him to the village infirmary…” (film commentary)
