Budenje

Danis Tanovic
1998 Bosnia; Belgium 52 minutes bosniac

After spending four years in Bosnia in a humanitarian organisation dispatching emergency aid during the war, then helping to rebuild the country, Bo Madsen heads for Denmark to resume his studies. Before leaving Bosnia, he takes his leave of his newly-made friends in a country he has grown to love. Many of them have lost everything – their parents, friends and homes – and all are deeply scarred by their experience. All they want is to return home, but their houses are in ruins or cannot be reached because of the quirky demarcation lines. In their distress, they are left with the memories and love of a country that they once knew as happy and peaceful. As the nightmare draws to a close, another struggle begins… that of reconstructing, starting from scratch, staying put even if this requires patience, as being refugees for the rest of their lives would be unbearable. Unlike the images broadcast by the media, the film focuses on a life that is gently quivering and awakening once again.
