“In Clejani, a village in southern Romania, luck has turned since the recent death of the oldest musician, the violinist, Nicolae Neacsu. It is as if he had carried off with him into the beyond the last bearings of a still viable world. Jobless, the young musicians lounge around with their low spirits. They have only one street to stroll down in summer and hang around in winter. ‘Life is screwy. One day you’re happy, the next day you’re sad… Marius takes up his accordeon and plays a gypsy blues, a typical Clejani melody. Just to chase away black thoughts and the money-lenders who would strip you of your last penny. Just to attract the pretty girls and, who knows, Johnny Depp, who had apparently promised to come all the way to be his youngest child’s godfather. Money-won, stolen, borrowed or exchanged is the only way out to elude the fate that grips the small gypsy community.” (Marta Bergman and Frédéric Fichefet)
