Csáladsiratô

László B. Révész
1993 Hungary 76 minutes Hungarian

The story begins as a fairy tale: once upon a time there was a Hungarian ropemaker and his wife living in a small village near Vukovar. They had six daughters who each married a man of a different nationality.” (Lászlô B. Révész) These six sisters were later separated by the frontier changes and tragedies of the Second World War, and then the civil war in former Yugoslavia. In search of their news, the director, who is the son of the eldest daughter, sets out with his parents, now settled in Hungary, to visit his dispersed relatives. Their journey starts in Germany and ends up in war-devastated Croatia, where the old family house is now nothing but ruins. Along the way, they fit together the different life courses of each member of the family. But communication is interrupted by the war, one of the sisters met tragic death, and the family are without news of another.
