Cunnamulla

Dennis O’Rourke
2000 Australia 82 minutes English

Cunnamulla, 800 km west of Brisbane, is the end of the railway line. Aboriginal and white Australians live together, but apart. In the months before a scorching bush Christmas, there’s a lot more going on than the annual lizard race. Life’s little stories unfold and unravel. Arthur drives the only taxi in town. His wife Neredah knows everyone’s business and tells it all. Marto, the local DJ, his girlfriend Pauline and his stepfather Jack. Cara and Kellie-Anne, who have dropped out of school and dream of big city life. Paul and his problems with the law. Herb, the scrap merchant, at odds with Ringer, the dog-catcher… Sometimes sad, often hilarious, this is an astonishingly honest portrait of life in a small, isolated outback community in Queensland, where creativity struggles against indifference, eccentricity against conformity.
