Des Lumières dans la grande noirceur

Sophie Bissonnette
1991 Canada 90 minutes French

The film delves into the recollections of an eighty-year old lady whose amazing memory, witty eloquence and sense of humour are still vivid. Her memories encompass the history of Quebec from the begining of the century to the years of the ” Great Darkness “. Lea Roback, a staunch feminist, a pacifist, an unionist, and a communist proud of her Jewish roots, has taken part in all the major social movements of the past decades. The film unravels her memories and is based on written records, old documentaries and interviews with Lea’ s childhood friends and comrades in arms. According to Lea, history should help us understand the present. Today, this eighty-year old lady who still champions social justice distributes pamphlets advocating peace even when it is 20 ° below zero…
