Named on the “Frederiks list” as being among “the most deserving Jews in the Netherlands”, some seven hundred people were grouped together in the Barneveld Castle at the end of 1942, at a time when the persecution and deportation of the Jews were at their height. Almost all of these scientists, artists, doctors… escaped death, even after their departure for Westerbork and Theresienstadt. For a long time after the war, they felt they had to keep silent about their experience and privileged situation. Nine survivors have now decided to break their long silence and recount this strange period spent in the castle where a certain feeling of comfort was tinged with fear of the future. They also turn back to the still-haunting questions : why such arbitrariness and the deaths of hundreds and thousands of Dutch Jews.
