“The foundry workers spoke of themselves as “white niggers” or were referred to as “the blacks”. They were proud to be a race apart, notwithstanding the soot blocking the pores of their skin and the wrinkles deepening because their profession was threatened. Thanks to Jean, I learned to love the foundries: the heavy smell of those dismal areas, the fantastic illusions that leapt out of flames burning yellow and blue in the moulds and pouring basins, with the smoke rising up to the filthy roof. A play of shadow and light, the magic of a 2000 year old craft.” (Folke Isaksson)
