Heart of Spain
The first production from Frontier Films is a montage on the Spanish Civil War and gives a politically engaged account of the life of the Republican combatants.
Né à Brooklyn en 1909, mort à New York en 1991. Après des études de cinéma, il rejoint la Film and Photo League (Paul Strand, Ralph Steiner…) en 1931 puis Nikino et Film Frontier. Chef opérateur, monteur, il a aussi été enseignant et rédacteur à la revue New Theater.
Paul Strand est né à New York le 16 octobre 1890, d’une famille d’immigrés juifs Tchécoslovaques.Il est mort à Orgeval, en France, en 1976.
En 1907 il suit les cours de photographie de Lewis Hine à l’ethical Culture High school, rencontre Alfred Stieglitz.
Pendant la première guerre mondiale Strand sert comme technicien en radiologie. De retour aux USA, il achète une caméra et produit son premier film documentaire sur New-York intitulé Manahata en 1921 avec Charles Sheeler. Paul Strand crée en 1936, la photo League à New York avec Berenice Abbot et avec d’autres cinéastes la coopérative de production Frontier Films. Ces projets lient photographie, cinéma et engagement politique et social. A la fin des années 40, il sera accusé de communisme et quittera les Etats-Unis .
