Hubert Robert. Schastlivaya zhizn’

Aleksandr Sokurov
1996 Russia 27 minutes Russian

The French painter, Hubert Robert, famous for his Rome vedute was a favorite of the Russian tsars. The Hermitage Museum keeps many canvasses in which the art of seeing mixes with the melancholy of ruins. The filmmaker adds to the painter’s images some of his own images shot in Japan, in the world of traditional theater, a place for distant mysteries.
