In Memory of Mawalan

Ian Dunlop
1983 Australia 92 minutes undetermined

In 1971, Wandjuk Marika, head of the clans in the North-East of the Arnhem region of Australia, organized a ceremony in memory of his father Mawalan. This ceremony, Djangkawu, one of the most important creation myths for the clans in this region, had another aim : to reaffirm Mawalan’s teaching. Only the public aspects of this teaching are shown in the film. Each song, each dance, have several meanings ; each one is full of symbols concerning creation, life, the earth.
