Romancier, scénariste, journaliste et critique il est connu pour “Louons maintenant les grands hommes” (1940) reportage dont les photos ont été prises par Walker Evans, et qui a été refusé par son commanditaire Time-Life en 1936.
Il a co-réalisé avec Janice Loeb et Helen Levitt le court-métrage :
