Israland

Eyal Sivan
1991 France 58 minutes Hebrew

On the building site of a gigantic attraction parc south of Tel- Aviv, antagonistic characters make up a contrasted mosaic. Joseph, the watchman, is sitting on a bank of sand and delivers comments on the news blared by his small radio. Avi, an Israeli truck driver, recalls his experience of war. Two Palestinian workers, Abou Khadit and Abou Ramzi, describe the difficulties they have to cope with at work. Abraham, the property developer, is a man who does not worry about anything. He is sure he is entitled to have his place in Paradise thanks to the attraction parc. Guershom, the German architect who converted to Judaism and became an Israeli citizen, analyzes the situation with a sense of humour and a detachment that stem from his personal history. Israland, this western enclave at the very heart of the Middle East, is a surrealistic metaphor for Israel.
