Joe Polowsky : ein Amerikanischer Traümer

Wolfgang Pfeiffer
1986 Germany 84 minutes English

On 25 April 1945, the Russian and American troops met at Elbe, near Torgau, in Germany. Both countries were allied at the time and their encounter was at once a victory on Nazi Germany and the end of fascism and war. On that day, American and Russian soldiers promised each other to do their best to protect humanity from another war. Private Joseph Polowsky, from Chicago, who became a taxi driver later on, took this promise so seriously that he dedicated the rest of his life – and even his death – to the agreement between American and Russian peoples and the friendship between the Elbe veterans of both countries. He always did this under extraordinary circumstances, indeed curious and even tragic ones. The film relates the story of this friendship and of a memorable dream.
