The years of the Depression, revived. As in Cooper’s and Schoedsack’s film, a travelogue filmmaker organizes an expedition and hires a starving actress. The sailor and the scientist are replaced by a screenplay writer and more is feared for the camera and film than for characters grappling with digitized achievements. References are made to (Hollywood) cinema, from travelogues to Chaplin, from the MGM musicals to Titanic, from Walt Disney’s Fantasia to Michael Curtiz’ dark ships. The creature who is an animal again dies in a final look. The last film is over.
