Anger, felt in one’s innermost being, at the injustice committed in one’s name sears through L’exil et le royaume. The banishment of the Sangatte exiles reveals the resurgence of shameful behaviours of the past. A few individuals are protesting against this situation: a retired railway worker, formerly a resistance fighter, a schoolteacher who, camera in hand, stalks police operations, an unemployed fellow that gives families a roof… parallel and dispersed forms of a nascent resistance, a freedom once again lifting its head. Closed shutters, locked doors, deserted streets… they walk on and on in the night in search of their fellow humans. They themselves have gone underground. (Yann Lardeau)
