L’ Ombre du chasseur

Gueorgui Balabanov
1991 France; Bulgaria 49 minutes Bulgarian

The film deals with the story of a family through 45 years of communism and the different attitudes adopted from one generation to the next. It shows the utopian socialist dreams of the grandfather, a former elephant hunter in Africa. It also depicts the feelings of resignation of his son, a man whose life was ruined by years spent in Bulgarian labour camps. The grandson, a truckdriver engaged in various mysterious dealings involving Bulgarian trucks, displays cynical pragmatism. Those three men’s destiny is endowed with true significance with the downfall of communism which took place when the film was being shot.
