Le Mariage d’Alex

Alex's Wedding
Jean-Marie Teno
2002 Cameroon; France 45 minutes French; Bamileke
DR

The story of a very special afternoon in the life of three people. Alex, the husband, sets off to fetch his second wife. As tradition has it, Elise, his first love and chief wife, accompanies him. Josephine, the new wife, will of course be leaving her parents to settle in her new household. “As I wished to respect everyone’s choices and avoid an accusing eye, I decided to film the wedding from a bystander’s point of view, in order to capture reality with both its obvious and hidden meanings as faithfully as possible. The ceremony is supposed to celebrate love and the beginning of a new, hopefully happy life. Yet, what emerges are endless words on submission and respect, pronounced in a deeply sad atmosphere.” (Jean-Marie Teno)
