Le Paimen

Markku Lehmuskallio
2001 Belgium; Finland 58 minutes Dutch

The story of an unconventional shepherd: Ludo Van Alphen, who wanders around with his flock of sheep-the largest in Begium-in the industrial badlands of the port of Antwerp. The arrangement is bizarre, but raising livestock has the same requirements all around the world’the animals need a place to gaze. Ludo was an educator at an institution for the mentally disabled before deciding to change his life. The film reflects on Ludo’s current life as a shepherd and the society in which he lives. A torchbearer for a long tradition of nomadism; he tends his herd in the middle of the port, a labyrinth of factories and roads. But we can see the end of the road for him-as can he.
