Le Rêve de São Paulo
São Paulo attracts the peasants from Sertão in the Brazilian Nordeste like an El Dorado, the mythical land of gold. José leaves his parents to join his brothers in the city of all hopes. On the journey there, the filmmakers encounter the poor side of Brazil. Two stonemasons working like slaves to earn a few pennies. A landless family housed in a miserable plastic hut, working a fallow plot of land as best they can. Fishermen, dredging a muddy lake with a makeshift net. In the city too, everyone struggles to survive. The dustmen acrobatically hauling huge waste bins around or the man carefully counting up each cent he has made from selling his transport tickets. José finally finds his brothers. All regret leaving their countryside and family. They dream of going back to Nordeste to live off the land they hope to buy. Just a pipe-dream ?
