Les Sucriers de Colleville

Ariane Doublet
2002 France 90 minutes French

Will the closure come or not? At the small sugar factory in Colleville, the final decision is awaited with a mixture of anger and resignation. The factory as a monster. The noise of machines, flashing control panels, the smoky ovens, the routine of clocking in and the night-watchmen. Men at work, mates exchanging confidences in the cloakroom, stealing time for a quick drink on the sly… a thousand small ways of making the factory bearable, and preventing it from devouring your life. Here, everyone knows that the sugar factory has not long to live. This year, next year maybe and, anyway, what does it matter? Some even wish for an immediate closure to get it over and done with. Anything is better than the nerve-wracking wait that imprisons the workers in feelings of rage and helplessness, and which heralds for all the end of work and the workers…
