Hawsa country, Mawri region, Niger, a chieftainship: Tibiri. Its chieftain, Samna, administers a territory, rules the life of the palace and arbitrates conflicts. But his power, which can be traced back to ancient history, has been upset by Islam and colonial conquest and appears as “trompe l’oeil”. Chieftainships gave become cogwheels of the State, merely executing its orders. Torn between the Koran and the present, Samna tries to find a solution.
