Maisha ni karata

Philippe de Pierpont
2003 Belgium; France 70 minutes French; Kirundi; Swahili

“In 1991, I met Zorito, Etu, Innocent, Philibert, Jean-Marie and Assouman, six kids living in Bujumbura (Burundi). I offered to come back and film them at key moments in their lives, right up to our old age. Maisha ni karata compares the young men they have become in 2003 to the teenagers and children they were during the first shoots. What is to become of these boys from the streets? How do they see the world and themselves? Through the story of our meeting and reunion, this film retraces how they have changed, how they face the world. ‘Taking stock of things,’ taking the shooting time as a chance to ask the questions that make us human beings, who are close for all our differences.” (Ph. de Pierpont)
