Nipponkoku Furuyashikimura

Shinsuke Ogawa
1982 Japan 210 minutes Japanese

Furuyashiki is a small village in North Japan where only eight farming families live. Ogawa and his crew examine the reasons that could account for the region’s poor rice harvests. They first look into the scientific aspects of the problem, but also discover from the accounts given by the village elders that there are historical reasons. The older villagers talk about how the region’s development has been shaped by the wounds, separations and losses brought on by war.
