Operación Masacre

Jorge Cedrón
1972 Argentina 100 minutes Spanish

One of the films that best characterises Argentine’s militant-political cinema. It recounts the summary executions at José Leon Suarez, which put an end to the June 1956 Perônist uprising, with Julio Troxler, one of the original survivors, as an actor. The film is based on a book of the same name by Rodolfo Walsh, who co-authored the scenario. Shot underground during General Lanusse’s dictatorship, it was financed by Jorge Cedrôn and a cooperative of the technicians and actors. It played a key role in the campaign that brought Perôn back for his third mandate in 1973, and was secretly seen by over one and a half million people before the 1976 coup d’état.
