Osaka Story

Toichi Nakata
1994 United Kingdom; Japan 75 minutes Japanese
DR

After spending a few years abroad, Toichi, the filmmaker, goes back to his home town, Osaka, to film his family. From the numerous details of everyday life, there emergethe visible schisms and hidden problems of this family living between the Japanese and Korean cultures, two cultures which have always found it difficult to co-exist. The father keeps another family in Korea, the mother is concerned about both her present and future position, the brother is torn between his involvement in the family business and the sect of which he is a member, one of the sisters has opted out and gone her own way. As for Toichi, his own situation is no less awkward. Should he return to Japan to settle down and fulfil the traditional role expected of an eldest son ? Or should he return to the West to live his own life the way he chooses?
