Karnak, February 1990. To commemorate the annual festival of the patron saint, Sheikh Musa, horse-riders from Upper Egypt enact their ancestors’ exploits, heroes of the Hilalienne tradition, the 11th century epic poem. Oboe players and drummers provide musical accompaniment, and judge the merits of the competitors.
