The third part of a trilogy on Mongolia including City of the Steppes (1994) and State of Dogs (1997). Mongolchaan, the retired miner, Tsetek, the engineer, the blind Amarjarkhal, Oyuna the exile… all of them talk and sing about nature, human destiny and homesickness: “They are not Mongolian poets, just ordinary people who are trying to survive in a fast-changing world. As everywhere, the people of Mongolia have unfulfilled dreams and desires. Life’s twists and turns never gave them a chance to become what they would have wished. Yet, they accept their fate without dwelling on the tragic side of things. And this is where poetry, in the widest sense of the term, comes into play – it makes it easier to accept everyday reality.” (Peter Krüger)
