The cow and the bull. The former is a symbol of fertility, the latter of virility. Both are caught up in the meshes of breeding and science, but they also hold a special place in the relationship between the gods and men. One is shipped to the slaughterhouse, the other led into the arena. In the company of researchers- in animal embryology and museum guides'”guardians of the herd”, as they call themselves’ the film follows the adventure of domestication and selection. And for the human kind, this provides a sort of mirror, since all the research carried out on cattle have later been applied to humans’ In a celebration of cows and bulls, the film tries to raise questions involving cultural, scientific and dreamlike aspects. For, who knows, perhaps the myth is still slumbering between us, humans, and these “hornèd beasts”.’ (Dominique Gros)
