Raja Sarajevo

Erik Gandini
1994 Sweden 49 minutes bosniac

A group of friends trapped in Sarajevo. Enes, Soba, Asja and Faris, all in their 20’ies. Under the shelling and the fire of the snipers they play music, go skiing, meet at cafes, try not to go crazy. The night when all the world news cameras are pointed at Sarajevo for the countdown before the UN ultimatum, they don’t listen to the news. Instead, they play an underground concert and have fun together. “We just act to live’ this is not reality !” says Enes. But later, in the ruins of the hospital, Faris bursts out : “How long will it take to rebuild all this ? I didn’t do no harm, I’m innocent. I don’t want to live here.”.”s Only one of them, Leyla, is in Sweden as a refugee. She can neither communicate nor meet her old “raja” (Sarajevo slang for “group of friends” or “gang”). But through the filmmaker they can send “videoletters” to each other.
