“A man from Russia spends a number of years travelling in the towns, villages and islands of Japan. The distinctions he draws between his Russian compatriots and the Japanese he talks to gradually fade, and they merge into one family. He decides to report on one of these encounters in the mountains with the 74 year-old Umeno Mathuyoshi, from the village of Asuka in the prefecture of Nara.” (Aleksandr Sokurov)
