Svyato

Viktor Kossakovsky
2005 Russia 40 minutes Russian

Two-year-old Svyatoslav sees himself in a mirror for the first time. He does not yet know what a reflection is. Nor does he realise that his filmmaker father has cast him in the role of an adventure hero. As he discovers the “other” little boy surrounded by his boys, Svyato tests out the unknown image. His elder brother and grandfather are at his side, the familiar faces of the “others”, silent almost and attentive. The small boy goes through the experience- both intriguing and annoying, then finally joyful-of self-discovery, and comes face to face with the fundamental questions that remain a solitary affair for each of us. Svyato fights and plays with his unknown companion, until he finally shouts “It’s me!” Svyato is the first part of a trilogy temporarily untitled Palindrome.
