The Great Indian School Show

Avinash Deshpande
2005 India 53 minutes Hindi

The headmaster of this large boarding school has found a solution to enforce discipline. He has had one hundred and eighty-five surveillance cameras installed in the classrooms, and controls them from his office. The system is effective: the headmaster can speak directly to the pupils and to the teachers to supervise their work. The closed-circuit television relays news, speeches and injunctions. The pupils affirm that they are happy. The teachers too had better watch their step. At the prize-giving ceremony, a public interrogation makes it possible to check that the pupil is on the right path, the path of true values. The headmaster feels ready to move to the next stage: separate the children from their families for several years in order to make them into perfect pupils, guided by teachers beyond reproach. The brave new world is now within technological reach.
