By the end of the 20th century, the Museum of Modern Art’s collection spanned a complete century of modern and contemporary artworks. The museum commissioned a video essay from Jean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Mieville to examine the place and context of art. By this point, the frequently collaborating duo had produced 2 television documentary series, and other video essays. The duo worked on The Old Place in the same manner as Histoire(s) du Cinema and On s’est tous défilé, being part cinema, poetry, examination, and documentation. The narration features the voices of Mieville and Godard as they discuss the place and role of art at the end of the 20th century.
