Over almost a hundred years, a large Sicilian community of fishermen, craftsmen and farmers came to settle in Tunisia, mainly at La Goulette. The film highlights the traces of a common history as found in the dialect and festivities, shared by Christians, Jews and Muslims alike. And the love stories that are still told today. Now things have moved in the other direction. Nearly 4 000 Tunisians have settled around Mazara del Vallo, a small port close to Trapani, and their living conditions in Sicily are reminiscent of the Sicilians’ in Tunisia. Most of the men are fishermen, and the families sometimes have not bothered to obtain official approvals. Yet, with the current trend of North-African immigration to a Europe that is closing its frontiers, their comings and goings between two close countries have taken on a different light. The focus of the film is on Hassid, Taufik, Ridha and the other Tunisians who make up the crew of the trawler Prometeo.
