UN Petit monastère en Toscane
Caltenuovo del Abate is a small Toscan village. Five Augustinians monks arrived from France five years ago with the ambition of restoring the monastery. There is a strong contrast from their severe world to that of the peasants and of the Chianti owners. “One can consider this documentary as the travel diary of a stranger in Italy, based on the impression he collected and listed in his mind next to events he lived before, without the pretention of discovering this country’s objectivity. I liked Toscan a lot, and I think that a look from afresh is always interesting. I couldn’t make a documentary on my country : I know it too well”. (Otar Iosseliani)
Né en Géorgie en 1934. Musicien de formation, il poursuit des études de cinéma au VGIK dans la section mise en scène. Son premier film passe à la télévision en 1958, le suivant est censuré, il exerce les métiers de pêcheur et d’ouvriers métallurgiste et revient au cinéma. Ses films sont retirés de la distribution en URSS mais ils seront montrés à Cannes. A partir de 1982, il travaille en France, pour la télévision et le cinéma.
