Une Histoire de vent

A Tale of the Wind
Joris Ivens
Marceline Loridan-Ivens
1988 France 78 minutes French; Chinese

A film-maker decides to go to China in search of the wind, better still he intends to record it on film. In the country of sky and water where he was born at the end of the 19th century, all men have dreamed of capturing the wind. He has lived through the 20th century, pushed along by the “Wind of History”. He has survived all the wars he has filmed and he has witnessed his friends dying for their ideas, populations rising up in revolt and revolutionary leaders becoming despots. More than once, the wind has pinned him to the wall. At the age of 90, it is now question of another kind of wind. The pursuit of the impossible ? A final challenge ? Or simply the road down which he must travel, something more imperative than anything else ? By what twists and turns will he succeed ? What does the wind hold in store for him ? And China ? Mythical, unexpected, unknown China ?
