When Hamlet Came To Mizoram

Pankaj Butalia
1989 India 52 minutes undetermined

Hamlet and Mizoram, a small state in north-eastern India, make an explosive combination. The Mizos, a people linked more closely to neighbouring Burma and China than are part of mainstream Indian culture, have a veritable love affair with Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. The film explores this strange relationship, the way people identify with the characters in Hamlet, which is enacted everywhere in Mizoram, city and countryside.
