You’ll Never Walk Alone

Jérôme Missolz
1992 France 90 minutes English

Liverpool : rain over the port, rows of look-alike brick houses, the endless monotony of depressed suburbs, ravaged by unemployment and despair, families destroyed by poverty and alcohol… But this is a city where family and working class tradition mean you sing to dream and to forget. Since the sound of the Beatles went around the world, the violence of rock has replaced sentimental ballads. For the youth of Liverpool, whose lives are made up of football, family and friends, music is a way of breaking out of the mundane. The aftermath of the Beatles has seen a profusion of groups, including Ian McCulloch’s. He guides the camera to reveal his city and his own life.
